Alajõe is a long shoreline village on Lake Peipus, where the houses stand in a row along the bank and the street names take after the river and the water's edge. Much of the housing is summer homes used only in the warm months. Being on the lake means damp: the door swells, the lock sticks, and a spring opening is a more common errand here than a broken lock.
